CHRIS MAJOR FOR CAYUGA COUNTY SHERIFF

A man in a navy suit with a light blue tie and American flag lapel pin standing outdoors in front of a building with steps.

I am a lifelong Cayuga County resident, currently living in Auburn with my wife, Eve—an elementary school teacher in the Auburn School District—and our 12-year-old daughter, Nadine. I also have two adult children: my daughter Caitlyn, a Syracuse University graduate who is completing her master’s degree at the Newhouse School, and my son Nicholas, who began his career as a patrolman with the Auburn Police Department in 2023.

BIO

After earning my B.A. in Public Justice from SUNY Oswego in 1997, I began my career as a Patrol Officer with the Auburn Police Department. I served with APD for nearly 21 years, retiring in 2021. During my time with the department, I helped implement the School Resource Officer (SRO) program when the presence of police officers in schools was still a new concept. I spent several years as an SRO at Auburn High School as the program grew in prominence nationwide.

For eight years, I served as Vice President of the Local 195 Police Union under Council 82. In this role, I gained valuable experience in negotiating and interpreting labor contracts. My work on the Local 195 Executive Board also allowed me to help establish the Auburn Police Department’s “Shop with a Cop” and “Random Acts of Kindness” initiatives—two programs that fostered positive connections between law enforcement and the community during the holiday season.

After retiring, I returned to the Auburn School District as a School Patrol Officer (SPO). In addition, I am part-owner of a successful Cayuga County business that I helped build from the ground up. I have served on several volunteer boards and am the founder of a charitable organization that has raised tens of thousands of dollars for local causes.

I am currently a member in good standing with the Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, where I volunteer my time to support a variety of local charities. Along with my work as an SPO and business owner, I also serve as a part-time police officer for the Village of Weedsport.

My family has a long and proud history of service in law enforcement, which you can read about below. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming year as I campaign for Cayuga County Sheriff.

Chris Major’s and His Family’s History of Service

the COMMITTEE

  • I am a lifelong resident of Cayuga County, where I’ve had the joy of raising my four energetic children. Before retiring in 2021, I spent my career serving as a Patrol Officer with the Auburn Police Department, including eight years as a member of the Local 195 Executive Board.

After retirement, I returned to APD and currently serve as a Special Police Officer in the Auburn City School District. I am also a part-owner of a successful local business in Cayuga County and continue to serve the community as a part-time police officer in the Village of Port Byron.

In my free time, I enjoy watching my children compete in sports and spending quality time with my family.

  • I graduated from Union Springs Central School in 1995 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the Rochester Institute of Technology. I later married my husband, Andrew Kalet, and we completed our family with two daughters.

In July 2000, I began my career with the Auburn Police Department, where I served as a Patrol Officer, Narcotics Investigator, and ultimately retired as a Detective in 2020.

Since retiring from the Auburn Police Department, I have continued to serve my community in dual roles: as the Officer in Charge for the Port Byron Police Department and as a Criminal Investigator with the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.
